Moved by the sufferings of the victims of the
tsunami on Dec. 26th 2004, Centre for Social Reconstruction
undertook a few relief activities and continues with rehabilitation
activities.
RELIEF WORKS
On 26th evening itself CSR launched relief work. Knowing
not the magnitude of the problem, CSR initiated in a small
way. Soon the intensity of the problem was understood and
the relief activities were scaled up. CSR established linkages
with institutions like AIMS India foundation, S.T. Hindu College,
NSS volunteers, K.G. Infor Tech and SAVE and facilitated them
to undertake rehabilitation activities among the tsunami victims.
With their support and involvement
Clothes were distributed to the people who took asylum
in the camps
Mats, Bed sheets, towels and nighties were provided to
140 deserving people
Medical camps were organized in two places. Basic medicine
was supplied to the deserving people who were injured or
sick.
Counseling services were offered to those who are psychologically
and emotionally disturbed.
A team of volunteers visited the villages and cleaned
the debris in a few places. They also supported the people
to restore their properties
Plates and tumblers were provided to 100 people in the
camps
Food items were supplies to nearly 1000 people
INTERVENTION IN FAMILIES
Family kits worth Rs 3, 25, 000 were distributed to 650 families.

Thus the kit contained the basic necessities for a family
to resume their life.
Besides the family kit, 300 brief cases worth Rs 52,000
were given to the families to preserve their things.
Family Counseling was extended nearly 150 families.
This enabled to resume their family life fast.
SUPPORT FOR MEDICAL TREATMENT
CSR has spent Rs 1,40,000 to support the hospitalized and
severely injured to meet their medical expenditure.
COMMUNITY COUNSELING
A cadre of 65 community counselors were trained and they
counseled the affected people in the camp, temporary sheds
and domestic settings. Besides them the staff of CSR were
also involved in counseling the people.
Community counseling centres were opened in Pallam, Sambasivapuram
and Veerapagupathy.
FOR STUDENTS
CSR supplied Notes, Books, Bags and other study materials
worth Rs 2,50,000 to 500 students. They were supplied to the
deserving students from Colachel, Keelamanakudi, Meelamanakudi,
Vavuthurai, Veerabhagupathy and Keelmuttam.
Counseling services were extended to nearly 1200 children
and they were facilitated to come out their depression or
shock and resume normalcy.
Games both in door and outdoor were organized for the children
and they were enabled to interact with other children and
assume a regular life.
FUTURE PLANS
Nearly a month of constant and continuous interaction with
the tsunami affected people, taught many lessons to CSR. Keeping
them in mind, CSR plans to implement

institutions and communities which have a social consciousness
and commitment.
