Tsunami Rehabilitation Programme:

Supported By: CORDAID, Netherlands

Objective : To ensure income generating resource to the children affected and persons with disability cauesed by tsunami or otherwise in Kanyakumari District.

Activities :

CSR provided vocational support for income generation to 80 persons with disabilities and parents of children with disabilities. The main aim of this programme was to support the persons with disabilities to earn a regular income of atleast Rs.2500 by the end of each month . The major activities are:

    •  Training to physically challenged persons

    •  Support to begin income generation activity

    •  Supply of Mobility aids

    •  Marketing support

    •  Linkages with financial institutions


2. Mental Health Programme:

Supported By : Medicines Sans Frontiers (MSF).

Objective : To provide support and counselling to the following groups.

a. Families that have experienced death
b. Fisherman who have a fear of returning to the sea
c. Children with a fear of the sea and an inability to concentrate on studies.
d. Other (sub) groups if identified after first assessment.

Target area : 16 Tsunami affected villages of Kanyakumari District

Counseling in a disaster simply means extending an emotional support to the affected people. This is done by Showing empathy, Listening actively, Allowing them ventilation, Extending social and medical support, Externalization of interest and Telling them the value of relaxation and spirituality.

 

Anganwadi Centres

Supported By : UNICEF

Objective : To facilitate the smooth functioning and effective management of Anganwadi centres in the coastal blocks of Kanykumari and provide support adhering to mutually agreed tools and techniques and help the district ICDS systems to follow up closely on the nutritional status of children in the temporary AWCs.

The specific objectives of the project is

1. To develop nutrition and health to age group below 6 years

2. Creating concrete structure to the child physically, mentally and community based activities decrease

3. Decrease the infant mortality rate, malnutrition, health hazards and school drop outs.

4. Making a good co-operation with other departments like schools, primary health centres and hospitals

5. Improving the status of child care and hygiene situations prevailing among women through nutrition and health education.

Target area: 5 Tsunami affected Blocks of Kanyakumari District

Target Group:
• 0 to 3 years children
• 3 to 6 years children
• Antenatal mothers (ANC)
• Parental mothers (PNC)
• Adolescent girls.
